My name is Alsa Fazal and I have trained to teach secondary Religious Education (RE) at UCL Institute of Education (IOE).
Before coming to the IOE, I completed my Undergraduate Degree in Philosophy at the University of Hertfordshire. This highly influenced my choice in becoming a teacher of Religious Education for a number of reasons: one being that I felt that it was important to instill an understanding of Philosophy, Ethics, and Theology from a young age being part of a diverse society. It also gives an opportunity for Philosophical inquiry, and the chance to grasp current issues around the world in relation to diversity and religion. It is for these reasons that I am passionate about RE.
As part of the PGCE Course, I have had the opportunity of teaching in two different schools. These experiences were highly helpful in developing my skills as a professional teacher.
Being involved with the READY Project has helped me to reflect upon teaching styles, and the variety of approaches there can be. I believe it has given me a real insight into the role of religion for young people, and how this can be prioritised for many in a school environment; not only that, it has enlightened me to think about pace in a classroom, and how much children have the chance to reflect on the idea of religion - as well as learning about its diversity.
